PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Junior Naturalist Program (JNP) at the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory provides youth with an opportunity to explore the natural world and to cultivate environmental stewardship in Sunriver, Oregon. Beginning in June each year, this 10 week program consisting of Junior Naturalist Interns (ages 9-12) and Junior Naturalist Assistants (ages 12-15) is free to Nature Center members.

The Junior Naturalist Assistants between the ages of 9 -12, work at the Nature Center Monday mornings 8:30 – 11:00 am with adult volunteers. A broad range of topics include; biking throughout Sunriver Resort to distribute brochures, small animal and bird care, exploring Lake Aspen, working on trails and weeding our botanical garden.  The Nature Center & Observatory staff will provide weekly educational activities for Assistant’s understanding of our natural environment and sky.

The Junior Naturalist Intern program allows youths between the ages of 12-15 to participate in a research project relevant to Central Oregon. This year the interns will investigate the Great Meadow and the history of Lake Benham, and Benham Falls geology.

These programs provide an excellent opportunity for young people interested in learning about the natural sciences.  To request an application (application deadline is June 1) or if you have any questions, please contact Bretagne 541-593-4394.
